What is a Career Specialist ?
   
A Career Specialist is a trained person who helps each student find a "Personal Pathway to Success."


What is a "Personal Pathway"

  • In May 1995 Governor Mark Sanford signed into law the Education Economic Development Act (EEDA)
  • Legislation that gives students the tools they need to have successful careers
  • A system set up to help student and businesses meet  these challenges
How will a Personal Pathway Help
  • Personal Pathways provides education and career planning resources
  • Personal Pathways brings together students, parents, educators, and businesses
Why is a Personal Pathway Important
  • It brings together a student's aspirations and abilities to have a career they enjoy
  • It brings about a better economy, and therefore, quality of life

    What are the 16 Career Clusters
            16 Career Clusters
Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Architecture and Construction Arts, A/V Technology, and Communications Business, Management, and Administration
Education and Training Finance Government and Public Administration Health Science
Hospitality and Tourism Human Services Information Technology Law, Public Safety, and Security
Manufacturing Marketing, Sales, and Service Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics Transportation, Distribution, and Logistics
  • courses of study organized around different sets of occupations
  • there are 16 clusters
  • students will take 17 academic and 7 elective courses in High School to create an individual graduation plan (igp)

This Cluster Has Seven Career Pathways
  • Governance
  • National Security
  • Foreign Service
  • Planning
  • Revenue and Taxation
  • Public Management
  • Administration
The first pathway is governance
  • includes officials elected or appointed
  • includes making and explaining public policy
  • includes the president, congress, governors, legislators, and local government working with constituents

Jobs under governance include:
all elected officials from the president to your local employees

The second pathway is National Security diverse activites from running a hospital to running a helicopter

Jobs include:

  • marines
  • air force
  • coast guard
  • all reserve units
  • air national guard
The third pathway is Foreign Service

this include all embassies,consulates, and other diplomats

Jobs include

  • consulates
  • ambassadors
  • missionaries
  • diplomatic couriers

The fourth pathway is planning

this includes development of long and short term land growth, revitalization, urban planning,rural planning, and suburban planning

Jobs include:

  • planning
  • economic development
  • censorhip
  • vital statistics

The fifth pathway is Revenue and Taxation

this includes the government obtaining, reviewing, and collecting all taxes and revenues from businesses and citizens

Jobs include:

  • IRS agents
  • tax examiners
  • auditors
  • assessors
  • tax clerks
The sixth pathway is public management

this includes people who possess skills and knowledge in technology, industry, environment and rules

these people protect our health and safety

Jobs include:

  • investigators
  • police officers
  • bank examiners
  • election supervisors
  • child support collectors
  • border inspectors
  • aviation safety

The seventh pathway is administration

this includes skills related to budget, procurement, regulations, policies, and  anyone who governs public management

Jobs include:

  • procurement specialists
  • city managers
  • chief of police


Occupations in Government and Administration

  The govenment can offer solid jobs with opportunities and satisfaction from doing public work. Most of the opportunities come from elections or legislative initiatives such as the emphasis on homeland security.  The federal government is the country's largest employer and is expected to grow about 2.5 percent by 2014.  Local govrnment jobs should continue to grow as the population grows.
