Blue Bottle Gullah Tree On behalf of Ms. Melanie Ward Art Teacher Garden Care Taker
Art students here at Fulmer Middle School study the Gullah people including well-known Gullah artist Jonathan Green. The Gullah people are African descendants who live on the Sea Islands along the South Carolina and Georgia coast. They have developed a distinctive culture. They are well-known for their foods such as Hoppin’ Johns and Frogmore Stew as well as their art such as Sweetwater basket weaving and Blue Bottle Trees. The Bottle Tree is a Southern Gullah folk-art garden tradition from the African-American community. The bottles, it is said, trap evil spirits and negative thoughts, keeping them out of your home. |
